I'm sure that by now he can do mass spectrometry of his ashes any time he wants, so he should have a slightly clearer view. Maybe it's just a candle to help him navigate, while we are completely in the dark.

I still think it might be a selection artifact. The team selected a few milligrams of the powder, and then the analyzer selected ONE particle of the ash. There's probably a range of efficiencies in the particles as a whole. This particular one might have been hyper-active and burned up all its Ni. Others might not have "ignited" at all.
