I belive it's done in the video effects software with a patented
algorithm by neven vision. There is some open source that does similar
things e.g. http://www.fuzzgun.btinternet.co.uk/rodney/humanbody.htm.
There's also interesting research going on in similar areas, e.g.

yes, its bare image recongition software.
I was nearly to buy that cam, but I found it too expensive.
So I searched the net and found that GPLed recongition software too,
of course that free stuff is not 'ready' like a com. app. and has not
nice built in 'avatars'.
If you code something with it that can use more cameras, please keep me
informed.
