I had boost installed but it was not linked. I'm working on OSX, so i *$brew boost link* then everything worked out fine except my problem with kmc surfaced and i tried other packages and I'm having similar issues with calculators. sorry for the late response... I posted to votca-ctp if this ever comes up for anyone else.
