woo hoo!
i'm watching fast times at ridgemont high! a few observations:
1
haven't figured out how to get sound. that's next on my todo list.
2
part of the problem is the encryption. when you try to read files on a
dvd without using css, you get read errors. how do they do that?!?
anyway, i downloaded css-auth, the implementation of de-css. i feel like
i'm doing some very naughty....
it's in serious need of shell/perl script. very inconvenient. you need to
unlock the disk, but you also need to unlock individual files and rename
the keys different things. pretty darn inconvenient. there's a bunch of
steps involved.
i'll start hacking a nice perl interface. it'll be "lugod's de-css script".
we can include it on the lugod cd.
3
the picture quality is amazing. absolutely amazing. you can get "fake"
fullscreen by switching the video timing mode. it's a *bit* choppy on a
pentium II/400, but only very slightly. (i AM using enlightenment... i'm
sure twm would be a vast improvement). see below for optimization ideas.
4
next step is to compile vlc (i installed via rpm) to take advantage of mmx
optimizations.
5
using mtrr's really increases performance. it's described in the linux-dvd
howto. (btw, the linux-dvd howto doesn't mention vlc; only livid. what a
crock of sh!te... i also emailed the "maintainer" about a mistake in the
howto and he never got back to me. any kernel >= 2.2.16 has the dvd ioctl
built in already. disregard the entire section of patching the kernel.
6
what ever happened to phoebe cates?
7
i'm going to try to run the fbdev server. i think that'll increase
performance too.
8
someone should start a "dvd key server" to download dvd and file keys. i'm
sure one exists somewhere, but i'm sure this would give the MPAA people a
heart attack.
9
i'm watching the carrot scene. this is too funny!!!!!
as spicolli would say... "whoa". (hey, doesn't keneau reeves say that
too?!?)
