reinstall linux?  heck no!

you have a file /etc/inittab which has the line:

id:5:initdefault:

change the 5 to 2.  (oops, i think redhat might be 3.  i don't use redhat
much.  anyone?).  be careful; you don't want to hose this file.

if that line contains a 2 or 3 (as opposed to 5), then xdm is being run from
a startup script.  you have a file

/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/S99xdm
            ^    ^^------------- this number may not be 99.  doesn't matter.
            |                    the important part is the "xdm" at the end.
        again, this might
        be a 3.

rename the file with a lowercase "s".

say good bye to graphical logins.
