dear all,

something wierd happened this morning, and would like to understand it.

i had a voodoo3/3000 for quite awhile; last night i bought a voodoo5/5500.

this morning, i put the voodoo5 in and rebooted. my network card didn't
come up on boot. "ifconfig eth0 up" was greeted with "no such interface".
insmoding tulip.o was greeted with "unresolved symbols". it was as if my
network card didn't exist. wait -- i know exactly what you're thinking.
the wierd part is coming.

i rebooted. i recompiled the kernel and rebooted. i rebooted again. no
dice.

thinking that it was an IRQ/ioport problem, i put the voodoo3 back in and
rebooted. the nic came up just great. so i made notes of IRQ's / ioports.
my plan was to compare ioports and irqs with when the voodoo3 was in the
computer and the nic worked.

i reinserted the voodoo5 and was prepared for the nic to not come up.
lo and behold, eth0 came up just fine with the voodoo5 in place. i'm
stumped. (when i said reboot, i actually meant halt, power down, power up).

why would the nic/voodoo5 not work for a bunch of reboots, then the
nic/voodoo3 works, then the nic/voodoo5 works?

pete
