Reading your phrasing, I just want to make sure the point gets
across... don't just edit /etc/crontab.

Use "crontab -e" or you will mess up cron.  If you are root, this will
have the effect of editing /etc/crontab.

BTW: Your concerns have much merit.  When I started using Linux, I had no
network and no clue how to set up as a workstation, and in my efforts to
learn those things my situation has changed so that I no longer have any
systems in that configuration.  There are still areas like news and mail
for offline use that baffle me... though I know there are also a LOT more
howtos at linuxdoc.org now than there were when I started (that site
didn't exist, and all I had was off my single Linux 1.2.13 cd).
