Hyperterminal is a terminal emulator for interfacing directly through the
serial port.  Minicom is the most common terminal emulator used in
Linux.

SNMP isn't secure, but if you trust your network the benefits can be
significant.  I don't know Cisco, but on Linux routers you can block
access to specific protocols on specific ports, thus allowing you to use
SNMP from inside but not from outside.
