i suspect that amsmath recently broke under woody.   the following code
snippet should produce a boldfaced x with a vector symbol over it:

        \documentclass[12pt]{article}
        \usepackage{amsmath}
        \begin{document}

        \begin{equation}\bf\vec{x}\end{equation}

        \end{document}

just recently (as in today), i found it produced a boldfaced x with a ~
symbol over it.

can other latex users confirm this behavior?
