we had a discussion awhile ago about the dreaded 1024 cylinder limit.
i remember someone saying that the new lilo will always boot a kernel
residing anywhere on the disk.  my reply was "i think it depends on your
bios".   now, i know for sure.  :)   i'm throwing this information into the
collective so that if i forget, someone here will remember.   :)

1. lilo needs the lba32 global directive.
2. lilo needs the set of enhanced bios calls (int 0x13, AH=0x42).  the
      enhanced bios became common in 1998.

given these two points, lilo is guarenteed to boot a kernel within the first
137 GB of a hard drive.


now, as far as the installfests goes.  it seems to me that if you have a PII
or newer, don't worry about the 1024 cyl limit.

if you're working on a PI or anything earlier, you'll prolly want to create a
separate /boot partition.
