The first thing I always try is resetting the PRAM. As soon as you power-on, press the following keys and hold them down until the OS boots:
Apple-Option-P-R If that doesn't work, try a boot CD. Like a recovery CD. I think Macs come with a basic diagnostics utilities on their recovery CD. To boot off a CD, you probably need to press the following button as soon as you power-on: c Yeah, just "c". ^_^ BTW, DON'T USE THE RECOVERY OPTION ON THE RECOVERY CD UNLESS YOU'RE PREPARED TO WIPE EVERYTHING OFF THE HARD DRIVE!
