Here is a guy's _how i did it_ page using the realtek provided drivers. The realtek drivers are listed as 2.4.18 drivers. Hopefully that means >= 2.4.18...

My recommendation is to look for a wireless card based on the Prism chipset. If you can get your hands on a Netgear MA401 (for example), you'll be a happy camper. There are several others, but that card is good because it works in Linux, and it also works in hoopty old laptops that only support 16-bit PCMCIA...
