You can fix this several ways. For simplicity sake, you probably wanna set your terminal type to ansi if it's "cygwin" from .bashrc in your debian box:
if [ "$TERM" = "xcygwin" ] then export TERM=ansi fi
Assuming, of course, you're using Bash.
