it may be too late now (maybe not too late):
for $80 or so you can get a linksys router and
set it to effectively use your Mac address.
Once that's in place you can hook up any
machine you want to the router.
What I don't know is if a Linksys router will
work with the Comcast equipment--seems
like it should, but I don't know.

This is true. I moved the interface card that was initially
used for the Comcast hookup to my Linux machine, and now
it works (great by the way).

I'm changing the subject here. But I was curious if anybody knows
why Comcast
does that.
I over-reacted calling Comcast scum. This is a shocking
revelation, however. My guess is security -- this is probably
the only way Comcast knows I'm me.
