OK, how about using Open Document Format (ODF) within OpenOffice (OpenOffice 
spreadsheet 
application Calc and their ".ods" format). These are XML (text files) that can 
deal with CVS (and 
Subversion) better than binaries and for those who want the binary Microsoft 
"loyalty" format 
(.xls) at the end of the game can do so easily via a conversion to Excel.
