This is just a guess but it sounds like an owership of the X-session issue. If you started the X-seesion as user or logged in through , for example, kdm, user owns the X-session. It may seem strange but X doesn't allow even root to connect. Try logging in as root before you startX or login through kdm. Be sure to logout as soon as the install is done and login again normally (as user)
