I can connect to the chromecast, but then lose internet connection to the outside world. Then, I can't play Hulu/Netflix anymore. Guest mode only seems to let one stream locally stored videos.

If the phone is getting blocked from Chromecast by AP isolation, then just turn off the phone's Wifi and try again.
