micah, this is a good point. if VA linux and every single linux based
company declared bankruptcy tomorrow, i for one wouldn't wipe my hard drive
clean and install something else. i suspect most everyone here wouldn't,
either.
the fact remains that we have a couple of non-commercial distros which are
based on volunteers' efforts. we have developers which keep new kernels and
new drivers coming, all done on a volunteer basis. there are plenty of
people ready to fill the shoes of anyone who decides to un-volunteer
himself. even linus himself is no longer necessary for linux. in fact,
some people say that linus himself is holding linux back in some regards
(like his stance on PnP, GGI and reluctance to release kernels on a more
regular basis, hence the ac patches.).
anything more than distro and development volunteers is simply icing on the
cake...
