Thanks for all your help and advices. I resolve the problem finally!

First, it's because of a very stupid mistake (shame) that I did
NOT set the default router of internal machines correctly. Here's
the former command I used to add route:

route add default gw internal_ip_of_gateway netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1

Note I set the metric to be 1, not 0.  So you see, actually the
internal machines are using some bad routing information.

Second, the echo reply packages with dest ip of internal address,
say 192.168... are dropped by router, I guess. So the gateway cannot
get them at all. After I setup Masquerade, it works!!!
