there are a number of alternate whois clients besides GNU's whois.
debian packages gwhois and jwhois, both of which are better than GNU whois.
there's also a "bw whois" which, imho, is the best of all. unfortunately,
they call their client "whois" too. :( since /usr/local/bin is way down
in $PATH, i uninstalled GNU whois. no love lost. i would never want to use
GNU's whois when i have bw's whois... highly recommended. it still
required that i look up "kauhava.fi" as "kauhava". wierd.
