You can tell pppd to try endless to reconect if ppp line goes down i.e.
pppd will reconnect.
address and netmask is in case you have fix ip. I have dynamic ip but
configured so...
My system is configured as follows:
My provider script is /etc/ppp/peers/telecom
/etc/network/interface entry:
auto telecom
iface telecom inet ppp
provider telecom
address 200.200.200.123
netmask 255.255.255.0
# please do not modify the following line
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth1 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
up /etc/network/telecom_config_interface || true
The script
/etc/network/telecom_config_interface
will enable masquerading and port forwarding stuff etc.
Add the following options to the file /etc/ppp/peers/telecom:
persist
maxfail 0
To try endless with the modem to connect (mz provider use pppoe).

fine with 'pon' and likewise disconnects with 'poff'. I'm now looking
to have the system treat it like the Ethernet, bringing ppp0 up when

I'd appreciate your thoughts guys, let me know how you would go about
doing this, like I say, I want to bring the connection up as early as
possible in the boot and then ensure it is maintained and reconnected
if dropped.
Also, getting the system to do a timesync once connection is made
would also be good so the system has the latest time, in the same was
it does when connecting over Ethernet.
