Thanks for the idea Robert! It led me to the culprit:
I'm running webmin on this box, and under Webmin
Configuration->Background Status Collection
there is a setting called "collect system status in background", which
was running
every five minutes. That's what was mounting / every 5 minutes.
I changed it to "never", and the mystery mounts have gone away.

For diagnosing the problem, perhaps try replacing /bin/mount by a short shell
script that logs relevant information and proceeds to call /bin/mount.real with
the given arguments?
