Whow... you're getting something completely wrong here.
IFF pictures in general are NOT interlaced. Some are, but that depends.
The speed difference comes from the different compressing algorithms.
As far as I know, IFF (what BTW, means* Interchange* File Format, not
*Interlaced* File Format) uses Run Length Encoding, while GIF, as we all know,
uses LZW-compression (or something similar) which takes much longer to
decompress.

But, on an up-to-date system (a 1200/030 w/o GFX card is not one), let's say
a 040 or 060 should decompress GIFs and IFFs in "realtime". I never had
problems with speed with GIF, I didn't recognize any decompressing time.
And, if it's 0.002 seconds or 0.005 seconds, I don't care.

I guess, using IFFs for local storage/cache would not be faster on fast
systems because the loading time difference of the bigger file would be longer than
the time won through faster decompression.

Supporting IFF because it's so easy to use with non-GFX-card systems is
stupid. *Every serious Amiga user* owns a GFX board nowadays.
And *every serious graphics software* supports GIF, PNG and JPEG.
