   You really have given some "food for thought."  Might there be some
similar problem as happen in trying to print, using version 3.5 of
AmigaDOS?  I found the simple solution was to copy the "printer.device,"
from version 3.1 of AmigaDOS to the devs: directory, to replace the
printer.device from version 3.5.  Maybe, instead of going totally back
to version 3.1, just copy the one appropriate file?

   Just a thought....
