Yepp, but not as one might guess. :-))
The construct is defined as:
login:password@server(domain)
AFAIK it works for several internet/network protocols,
e.g. HTTP, FTP, TELNET (?, I'm not quiet sure),
SSH (?, hhmmm, no I don't think so.),...

This works already since V2.xx.
(E.g. you can log in that way at many password protected sites.)
