I don't believe you for being skeptical. I'm a programmer and I
understand where you're coming from.

I just did as you requested and was very methodical about it. Here's
what I did.

1. Using the 2.2beta2 version, I uploaded using a VPN address and then
again with a public address outside the VPN.
        VPN Upload Speed: ~450KB/sec.
        Non-VPN Upload Speed: ~550KB/sec

2. I uninstalled 2.2beta version and installed 2.1.7. I used the same
profile (it's nice it remembers all that between uninstalls and
installs BTW). Same urls and same files to upload.
        VPN Upload Speed: ~12KB/sec.
        Non-VPN Upload Speed: ~550KB/sec.

The higher rates vary a lot +/- 50KB/sec., but the slow VPN rate is just
pretty slow.

I had tried 2.1.6 the other day with the same result. I hadn't gone
back any further since the 2.2 fixed the problem. Also both of my
Windows 7 64 bit machines seem to have this problem. Maybe it's router
related?

I have a Belkin N600HD router.

    Hardware F7D8301 v1
    Firmware 1.00.30 (Dec 24 2010)
    Boot Loader 1.08e

I have an update on this. For the heck of it, I installed version
2.2.0-beta2. That seemed to fix it, or at least made it much better.

I now get about 400KB/sec from both 64bit machines.

Subject: [vpn-help] Windows 7 64bit Slow VPN

I realized that my upload speeds to my office over our VPN were very
slow so I started digging into it. At the office we have a Netscreen
10 hosting our VPN connections. On one of the servers at the office
we have a nice HTTP based file server that I can access remotely
using a public IP address (no vpn) and a local IP address (vpn), and
when uploading it displays KB/Sec. This gives me the ability to
compare upload speeds.

Also, at my remote site (home - Comcast cable), I have several
different machines behind the same router running different OS's.
These are the machines.

Two Windows 7 64 bit machines
One Windows 7 32 bit machine
One Windows Vista 32bit machine

All the machines have Shrewsoft 2.1.7 installed using the same config.

I tested all them without the VPN and they all uploaded at about
550-600KB/sec.

On the Window Vista 32bit machine, I tried both Shrewsoft and my
original Netscreen client. They both performed ok at about
450-500KB/sec. (Slower than without VPN, but I guess that's
expected).

Same results as above on the Windows 7 32 bit machine.

However, on both the Windows 7 64bit machines, I'm only getting about
12KB/sec which is painfully slow.

A co-worker at another remote location using Windows 7-64bit and
Shrewsoft 2.1.6 can upload at about 550KB/sec. I uninstalled my
2.1.7 version and installed 2.1.6, but I get the same results, so I
don't think it's 2.1.7.

Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look to figure out why
it's so slow.

Thanks for the update Mark. I'm glad it's working faster now, but I'm
not sure why. I don't recall anyone complaining about performance of
2.1.x on Win7-64bit on the list before now. Are you interested in
downgrading to 2.1.x on one of those machines to see if the performance
problem re-occurs?

Hi Mark,

I mentally corrected your typo, so no worries. :) Thanks for doing the testing. It definitely does seem like there's something there slowing things down.

Unless you're willing to test your machines behind a different router, I think we'll park this. We haven't had anyone else complain about performance so far. 2.2.0 does have a number of changes in it to better support Win7 (the Virtual WiFi Miniport adapter conflict fix among them) and maybe there's some tweak there for throughput. (I suppose you could read the changelogs for 2.2.0 if you're really keen.)
