hmm, interesting ... but let me get this straight:

you say:

 - you did a rm -rf /vservers/SOMESERVER/ (on the host)
 - this removed? your /dev entries on the host?
 - you fixed that by ssh-ing in and recreating the /dev

my question:

 - how could rm -rf remove the dev node from your host?
