Hmm... 1) Make sure you've got the latest copy of debootstrap. 2) Make sure you've mounted a copy of /proc in the directory where you're running debootstrap 3) Make sure your internet connection is functioning right.
I remember when I first ran it, it didn't have /proc in there first, which was a problem.
