I use Linux VServer on amd64 on Debian, package version
2.6.16-1-vserver-amd64-k8.
When I start gdb on any program inside a virtual server, the computer
freezes, apparently with kernel panic. The freeze happens either
immediately after starting gdb on a program or when trying to run the
program in gdb. This happens with both gdb 6.4 and gdb 6.4.90. When
gdb is started on the primary machine, it runs fine.
Is it a known problem? Can I do anything to get gdb run inside a
virtual server?

Update to a more recent version. This particular bug was fixed in
2.{0.2,1.1}-rc19.
