It's a historical hangover from AT&T System V.
They called the commercial programs which used the o/s as "options" ( because
you did not _have_ to purchase them ) and put them into the /opt directory
structure, which could be on a separate drive and file-system.
It's just a custom. You can put your programs wherever you want in the $PATH.
