The elspeth tools do interesting things: they use the send command to inject 
definitions for widgets and such into running processes.  Clearly, the same 
technique could be used to suck those definitions out.

How hard would it be to send a series of configuration queries to a running 
process, and churn them out as compounds, in the vtcl understood format?

This tool could even run stand-alone.

I've looked at the format in which compounds are stored, and it looks very 
interesting.  It's very compact, it's reasonably easy to interpret.  Packaged 
properly, it (or something like it) could be a contribution to the wider tk 
community.  Oh, I forgot to add, it's quite close to complete (as regards 
encoding packing parameters and such.)
