I haven't tried non-blocking I/O on a socket, so I'm no help.

I'm just writing to mention that I'm the current author of TkGnats, the
front-end for the GNATS bug tracking system. Feel free to have a look at
GNATS and TkGnats for any ideas you'd like to steal, and by the same token 
I'd appreciate hearing about the short-comings of GNATS/TkGnats that would
inspire you to write your own!

I'm nearly done adding gnatsd socket support to TkGnats, which should then
allow it be be ported to Win95/NT.
