Subject: [UFPJ] RNC 8/29: Endorsed? Mobilizing? Sending Buses?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear UFPJ member group,
With less than two weeks to go before what promises to be a history-making demonstration against the Bush agenda on Sunday, August 29th, there is still much work to do. We are moving full-speed ahead with our plans for a legal, permitted, peaceful march past Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican Convention. We have an opportunity to make this a truly massive, broad-based mobilization against the Bush Agenda, and we need your help:
(1) STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND YOUR OUTREACH EFFORTS
Help us make sure everyone in your community knows about this important demonstration. Send notices to your email lists, organize phone banking to your members, send teams of people out to leaflet in busy areas, write letters to the editors of your local papers, and call in to radio talk shows. Let people know your organization is helping to send people to New York City. Visit the United for Peace and Justice website for organizing materials and updates about the plans for August 29th: http://unitedforpeace.org
(2) ENDORSE AUGUST 29th
More than 250 organizations have already endorsed August 29th, but some groups—even groups we know are coming to NYC for the 29th--have not yet formally listed themselves as endorsers on our website. Our opponents are doing all they can to discourage people from attending this march. Your group’s endorsement is key to helping us convince a larger and broader range of communities to come out that day. By listing your website, you can also publicize your group’s work.
Please endorse NOW at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/aug29endorse . To see if your group has already endorsed, visit http://unitedforpeace.org/endorse3.php .
FYI: Some tax exempt groups have expressed concern that an endorsement could pose legal problems for them. According to our lawyers, because UFPJ’s message focuses on our opposition to the Bush administration’s policies, not support for one or another party or candidate, an endorsement of the August 29th demonstration falls well within a tax exempt organization’s legal parameters.
(3) TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOBILIZING PLANS
We know many of you are making plans to come to New York, but we need the details in order to do all of the necessary planning and accurately communicate this to the media and each other. Let us know what you are doing to get the word out, and what the response has been. Do you have an estimate of how many people are coming from your group or community?
Our goal is to have cities and towns from Maine to Florida, from the eastern seaboard to the Mississippi River be part of the march on August 29th...and if people can come from even further distances, that's terrific! We can help you plan your work for these next two weeks and can also put you in touch with others in your area.
Please contact Andrea Buffa or Judith LeBlanc at the UFPJ office at 212-868-5545 to discuss this, or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
Be sure to bring banners and posters and signs displaying the name of your city and state. We would love to have every corner of the country represented and visible as we march past Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican Convention.
(You will soon be receiving a separate email from our media coordinator with suggestions about how best to publicize your plans via your local media.)
(4) SHARE YOUR TRANSPORTATION PLANS WITH US
In order for us to do our best planning, get a sense of the turnout, and help you fill your buses or rains, we need to know how many chartered buses and trains to expect and how many people are arriving via group-organized train ticket sales.
Let us know (1) who your transportation contact person is and (2) how and where your group will be arriving: if by train, which station you’ll come in at, what time you expect to arrive, and an estimate of how many people you expect; if you are coming by bus, how many buses you are planning for. Please send this information to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and list it at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/buses .
(5) IF YOU CAN’T COME TO NYC, ORGANIZE A LOCAL PROTEST
If your group can’t travel to New York, we strongly encourage you to organize a local RNC solidarity protest on August 29th.
Let us know about your local plans by posting them on our Local Events Calendar. You can get there by clicking on the “Events” section of our homepage, http://unitedforpeace.org . Select “Republican National Convention” as the Event Type.
We welcome your group’s endorsement of the NYC march even if you can’t be with us!
Thanks for all the work you’re doing to make August 29th a success. And, as always, let us know what we can do to help your efforts. 212-868-5545
Best,
Hany Khalil
