Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) URGENT ALERT PMRS UNDER FIRE Tuesday 31st August 2004 PMRS condemns Tuesday's attack against PMRS mobile clinic staff who were fired upon today August 31st, 2004 at noon, whilst waiting at the Abu Holi junction checkpoint in the Gaza Strip. The medical team was on its way from Khan Younes to Deir El Balah, as part of their humanitarian mission. Medics reported how Israeli soldiers began shooting at their vehicle as it sat stationary in front of the checkpoint. The situation was quiet and there was absolutely no reason for the attack. Two of the six passengers, a five-man medical team and their driver, were injured. Doctor Wafik al Abadilah was shot in his right thigh; his situation is moderate however the driver Subhei Madi who was shot in his hands and his leg is now in the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis where he is undergoing surgical operations. The mobile clinic Israeli soldiers fired at is a donation by the German organization "Hammer Forum e.v. for humanitarian medical aid for children in war zones and regions of crises" Dr Jihad Mashal - head of PMRS in Ramallah condemned the attack commenting how often the medical staffs were coming under fire from the Israeli army as they tried to carry out their, often urgent work in the West Bank and in Gaza. This latest attack, he said, for which there was absolutely no defense, only provided new confirmation of the barbarian behavior of the Israeli forces - who seem incapable of showing the least respect for international law. PMRS asks all humanitarian, human rights and health organizations to protest these recent actions and pressurize the Israeli occupation forces to allow the free and safe movement of medical teams.
