Louis,
The Refuser Solidarity Network is organizing a refuser tour this fall, and
we can include Brandeis as well as other campuses and communities around New
England. The tour will include some or all of the five released from prison
today. See the attached schedule showing that the tour is coming to New England
October 30 to November 4. See also the note below describing other aspects of
the tour.
It will be a fast moving tour. We will want to hit various towns here,
including the Boston area, Northampton, Brattleboro, Hanover, Middlebury,
and Burlington during our five days, focusing on campuses, TV, and radio.
We will organize a teleconference soon to set the itinerary for New
England. If you have Brit Tzedek contacts at other campuses in the Boston area
please let them know as well, and we will include them in the telecon too. We
might be able to include New Haven and other towns too.
These folks are refusing soldiers, and they are used to moving fast and
working hard. We can have events morning, noon, afternoon, and night on campuses
if necessary to meet everyone's needs in the Boston area and throughout New
England. We hit four towns with refusing pilot Yonatan Shapira's tour in July
over just two days. Each event will need a local coordinator or local group to
plan, organize, and publicize that event.

Subject: Shministim tour
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I've attached the schedule proposed for the tour of the
Shministim in October/November.
The five are being released from prison tomorrow; we won't know
probably until October 1 whether the IDF will release them from further efforts
to conscript and rejail them for their refusal. If they decide to release them
at least two and possibly three of them will be on the tour.
If the IDF does not let them go and therefore they cannot travel
from the country, we have been promised other Shministim speakers to replace
them.
We're going ahead with the planning and the national tour will be
sponsored by the Refuser Solidarity Network and the American Friends Service
Committee. I've been working with Oskar Castro the AFSC's Youth and Militarism
Program Director to establish an itinerary and broaden our contacts. AFSC will
provide resources for developing fliers, press releases etc. through their very
capable communications/resources offices. We're holding off on all of that
however until weknow for sure who will be coming.
The goals of this tour are two fold: the first is to emphasize
campus/high school/youth group exposure to increase awareness of both the issues
of the Shministim, but to introduce the idea of selective refusal==the refusal
to serve illegal occupation--to our young people who increasingly face similar
choices. The second is to raise funds to support the work of the Shministim.
We have therefore tried to establish enough time in each venue to
reach campuses and other youth groups and to allow for broader community based
meetins/house parties and other events which might help to raise
funds. We also have left it up to local organizers to decide the
wheres and whys of events within the time frame we have presented.
Lou Waronker has been in touch clearly wanting events in
Brattleboro and Clint Hendler at Dartmouth has indicated the same. I've been in
touch with Jimmy Leas, so my guess is that you will all decide together
what will happen in New England.
I look forward to hearing from all of you again...soon as
possible, please.
Thanks
Judith
