As the war-turned-occupation rages on in Iraq, 1.2 million more people in the US fall into poverty, and the racist attacks on Muslims and Arabs escalate, millions of people in the US are looking for a way to change the course of this country.� With a half a million taking to the streets in late August to protest the Bush Agenda, and a majority of people who now believe the war in Iraq should not have been fought, it is clear that the US is a polarized country.� Although many people hope that getting Bush out of office will provide a change, the Democratic candidate John Kerry is promising very little.� Kerry agrees with aims of the war in Iraq and the war on terror overall, but says that Bush has been ineffective in carrying them out.� Kerry also wants to lower corporate taxes, opposes gay marriage and voted for the Patriot Act.
The Anybody But Bush strategy is unfortunately allowing mainstream politics to move further to the right, as movements get put on hold and progressives hold their tongues and their noses, preparing to vote for a man they firmly disagree with on numerous issues.� In fact, the majority of Americans are far to the left of both candidates on issues such as health care, education funding, social security and union rights.� There has never been a more urgent time to build a broad, democratic political left in the US that can help re-invigorate the anti-war movement, as well as a movement that ensures our rights and welfare here at home.
Crucial to this process is political debate and discussion of the questions and issues that face us in this election year and beyond.� This conference is an effort to take up current debates inside the movements as well as lay out a socialist perspective on how we can fight for a fundamentally democratic and equal society where it is not war and greed that dominate, but instead all lives are valued and decisions are made based on human need.
