Dear Sir or Madam,

I wish to thank your Paper for sending your Correspondent to cover my presentation on the subject of Israeli apartheid and my call for sanctions against Israel, delivered at the press conference held at the National Art Gallery on Sunday, 29 instant and sponsored by Deir Yassin Remembered (DYR) of Malaysia.

In this connection kindly allow me register a clarification to the effect that the State of Israel does not prohibit its Jewish citizens from trading with Palestinians, rather Israeli law, notably legislation regulating access to land and housing, denies Palestinians equal access to the territory of the State.

In the Republic of South Africa the apartheid division was between Whites and non-Whites.  In the State of Israel the apartheid division is between Jews and non-Jews.  In the heydays of South African apartheid, 87 per cent of the territory of the Republic was restricted IN LAW for settlement, cultivation and development by Whites only.  In the State of Israel 93 per cent of the territory of the State is designated IN LAW for settlement, cultivation and development by Jews only.

International anti-apartheid solidarity, boycott campaigns and UN sanctions against the apartheid Government of South Africa made a significant contribution to the dismantling of apartheid legislation in Southern Africa to the benefit of all parties concerned.  There is little doubt in my mind that similarly International anti-apartheid solidarity, boycott campaigns and UN sanctions against the apartheid Government of the State of Israel will similarly make a significant contribution to the dismantling of apartheid legislation in Palestine, likewise to the benefit of all parties concerned.

Sincerely

Uri Davis (Dr)
