Please Distribute Widely! No to the Bush Death Machine Abroad and At Home!
Sign the Petition / Spread the Word: If you haven't already done so, please distribute word of the return of the death penalty to Vermont and the movement to oppose it to all listservs you belong to and all Vermont residents on your email lists! Sign the petition to say no to the return of the death penalty in Vermont at www.petitiononline.com/vadp/petition.html Background: The Bush administration is using the 1994 Clinton crime/anti-terrorism bill to bring the death penalty back to states such as Vermont that have abolished capital punishment. In fact, right at the moment when states like Illinois and Maryland were declaring moratoriums, releasing exonerated prisoners, and clearing death row, Ashcroft selected 12 cases to try as capital cases--including the case, currently underdoing jury selection at the federal building in Burlington, of Donald Fell. What Else You Can Do: * Help us petition each Saturday at the Burlington farmers' market - meet at 10:30 at the water fountain in City Hall Park - or download a petition from the Peace and Justice Center website (www.pjcvt.org) to take to work, churches, organizations etc. * Join the Vermonters Against the Death Penalty (low-traffic) listserv at http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/nodeathpenaltyvt * Come to the June 20th press conference - 12:30 pm, Unitarian Universalists, on Pearl Street at the bottom of Church Street - so that we have a large crowd beneath the Vermonters Against the Death Penalty banner * Attend our "Keep Vermont Death Penalty Free," June 22, 7 pm, Contois Auditorium in Burlington City Hall, with Sandy Baird (attorney, former state legislator, mother of murder victim Sandy Baird Crichfield); David Kaczynski (New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty and brother of Ted Kaczynski); Alice Kim (Campaign to End the Death Penalty, activist in the Illinois moratorium and clearing of death row); and Billy Moore (former death-row inmate and author of I Shall Not Die: 72 Hours on Death Watch). * Join us each Wednesday, noon-1, for a picket in front of the federal building (corner of Pearl St. and Elmwood Avenue) and 1-2 pm for our planning meeting in the Peace and Justice Center. And again, let people know about our paper and on-line petitions! Though petitioning will continue through July, we're looking to get as many signatures as we can by the June20th press conference.
