NEW YORK, October 13, 2005 (WAFA)- Al Jisser Group,
The Kazbah Project, and Nibras Theatre Collective will present, in New York
City, "Acts or Palestine", an evening of one-act plays set in Palestine and
written by Palestinian playwrights. The plays will be shown on Sunday, &
Monday, October 16 & 17.
"Acts for Palestine is an evening of one-act plays
set in Palestine, written by Palestinian playwrights. These performances,
organized to benefit Al Jisser's "Made in Palestine " art exhibition, will bring
audiences the opportunity to experience Palestinian theatre - humorous,
exhilarating, and thought-provoking", read a press release by Al Jisser
Group.
Many made-in-Palestine plays will be staged. The
plays will tackle several issues such as love, occupation, war, society and
peoples.
"Between Our Lips" by Nathalie Handal, Directed by
Lameece Issaq is a suspenseful play about love, occupation and the painful
complexity of separations, Ayat, arrested for murder, is unexpectedly visited by
Homer, a journalist she knew in the past, who returns to interview her moments
before she is to be sentenced.
Another play, "Palestine" Written and performed by
Najla Said will be shown. The play was written just months after her fathers
death, " Palestine," is both a political and extremely personal piece which the
author vividly recounts her first ever trip to her fathers homeland at the age
of 18, and then brings us back to the present day, as she struggles to make
sense of her dual identity in a very different world.
"Macklubeh" by Sami Metwasi, Directed by Maha
Chehlaoui. Although living in a country where people are surrounded by constant
death, an old lady, alone in the world, somehow manages to survive to an old
age. Then one day an angel arrives to inform her that death is coming to take
her, today.
Not ready to die, the old woman refuses to accept
the angel's omen but then something happens and changes her mind.
"Pressing Beyond in Between" by Soha Al-Jurf,
Directed by Dalia Basiouny, is about a Palestinian-American playwright and
performer's exploration of social, political, and personal boundaries. This
autobiographical solo performance piece examines the challenges of defining
personal identity within the context of gender, religion, and nationality.
