Hi Udesh, thanks for looking into VXQuery. Building the project should be trivial. We're using maven and so if you get the source and run "mvn test" in the vxquery directory everything should just work.
Wrt. the concepts it would be interesting to know how much exposure you've had to query processing so far. Did you work on a query processor before?
