If you didn't configure it, that certainly shouldn't be the issue.  Is
your domain
name server slow to respond?  That might explain why it takes a few tries for
these commands to work - it can't connect until the FQDN is resolved.

See how nslookup is responding to the same addresses, and if it takes a while
to get an answer.
