We have tested under both. We use VMware Server here a lot for our standard regression testing. I don't have a handle on the performance loss. The VMware certified virtual appliance on our web site has the VMware tools compiled in, which means you get the optimized LAN drivers. I don't know the exact performance, however. We are slated to do some of that testing in the next few months. I'll report what I can when we get the numbers. If anybody in the community has some time and wants to run a test, I'd love to hear the results. Note that you probably need to be careful with respect to the testing restrictions in the VMware license. I know in the past they have prohibited people from publishing performance benchmarks. I haven't looked at the current license or the restrictions, however, so things may have changed a bit for the better. -- Dave
