Hi all.
I'm happy to announce the JLC has now officialy joined
the "technical problems club".
Yesterday we had the multimedia lecture, all relevant
apps were installed few days earlier on my laptop and
I've tested it all and found it to work properly.
However so I didn't check one crucial thing - if it
works in class. And indeed it didn't. Apparently the
driver on my Dell D610 (with i915 chipset and i810
driver) can't transmit Xine and VLC video to the VGA
port. Lucky enough I encountered this problem before
when we gathered the JLC to watch the recent FOSS tv
show (the one that the Ubuntu zilioner supported) and
we tryed to lanch the file from an IBM laptop (with
ati graphic card and the appropriate 3D supporting
driver). The solution then was to use the fbdev and
that what I did now. Unfortuntly the multimedia
lecture involved many 3-D requiring apps so some
didn't work (blender and others) and some worked
slowly (cinelerra and others).
Points to take home -
beware of laptops VGA port and Xine/VLC when using 3-D
supporting driver.
When using a laptop VGA for teh presentation don't mix
3-D apps with such that are not. Try to split the
lecture to 3-D section and players section and use the
appropriate xorg configuration on each.

That's mostly all.
Good luck with the rest of the series.

Dotan
