Subject: Environment Colorado BREAKING NEWS: 5 new mercury advisories Act now!

Hi Evan,

Today, the Rocky Mountain News reported that that mercury pollution has reached unsafe levels in five more Colorado lakes, including important recreation and drinking waters across the state from Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins to Trinidad Lake in southern Colorado. The public health advisories warn children and pregnant women to avoid eating any fish from these lakes and that even healthy adults should minimize fish consumption from these polluted waters

Coal-fired power plants are the number-one source of mercury, which is a deadly neurotoxin that can cause development disabilities, cardiovascular problems, nervous systems problems, and even death.

We've been working hard to get the state air commission adopt a Local Government Coalition proposal to set a hard standard for mercury pollution and reduce it 90% by 2014. Unfortunately, electric utilities have been fighting tooth and nail against this, and instead have backed a cap-and-trade scheme that would actually allow for increases in mercury pollution.

Please take a moment to email the Colorado air commission and tell them this latest news is unacceptable and they should adopt a hard standard to stop mercury pollution. Then ask friends and family to help by forwarding this email.

Coal-fired power plants are the number one source of mercury pollution. This deadly neurotoxin can cause learning disabilities, reproductive problems, cardiovascular problems, nervous systems problems, and even death.

Mercury is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women as their babies are developing. According to the EPA, over 400,000 children are exposed in utero to mercury levels that exceed recommended limits.

Now, 14 lakes across Colorado have mercury advisories warning that children and pregnant women not to eat fish from those lakes because of mercury pollution. Also, approximately 30% of all lakes sampled in Colorado exceed the EPA fish tissue standard for mercury. The U.S. Geological Survey found that power plant pollution is directly linked to elevated mercury levels.
