The first fish I ever caught at Pass Lake was on a chironomid with NO 
indicator.  When the wind is up, you can cast a lightly weighted fly at right 
angles to the wind and just let it drift down.  The line will drift with 
enough tension that way so that you can feel most strikes.  Let it go all the 
way to the bottom (figuring that out is the tricky part) and then do a slow, 
hand twist retrieve with pauses.  I've gotten some nice fish without 
indicators.
