I second the recommendation for Fly Fishing for Pacific Salmon and I'm
excited to hear that I new edition is finally in the works. (Though I
remember Les talking about this project a few years back. Takes time I
guess; I recall a comment in the intro to the 1st edition about the book
evolving from a 1 year project into an 8 year project.)
It would be great if there were more emphasis on the near-shore
opportunities - whether boat-bound or shore-bound. Would be
especially nice though if there were more more specific, more detailed,
practical information on the feed species of interest. Actually, the
example of dry, pedantic prose I cited in my original post was, more-or-
less, lifted straight from FFPS (sorry!).
I mean, there's loads of good, very useful stuff here. Ferguson's
description of the importance of the retrieve in fishing zooplankton, for
instance. But I still have a hard time connecting much of it - especially
the feed species information - to real-life fishing situations. Maybe just
me, but I got nearly as much from the 3 or 4 paragraphs of Tom's post
than the entire Salmon Feed chapter of FFPS.
Don't get me wrong - it's an excellent book. Just could be made better
by a little more specificity and detail... and a few more examples
wouldn't hurt either.
BTW, another book I'd give the nod to is Steve Raymond's "The Estuary
Flyfisher". Substantially different both in organization and focus, it also
seems somehow more connected to matters at hand. But maybe that's
just because we know the estuaries he's writing about are Puget Sound
and Hood Canal and not some body of water between Baja California
and the Queen Charlotte Islands.
