The reel that is offered in the subscription offer is a 5/6 model. The drag
on the Sierra reels is patterned after the System 2 reel. I suspect it's
not quite as well made, though, but if a person is looking for a disc drag
reel under $40, it's definitely one to consider.

There are a few very, very good machined disk drag reels that are in the
$100+ range that could easily handle bonefish. The Ross C-4 is a 7-8 weight
reel, machined, with a very good, durable drag. The model retails for about
$140, I believe, but I know of a guy that sells them new for I think 20%
off, and sometimes a person can pick one up used for $100 or under. The
Teton Tioga is a very populer machined reel, with a disc drag, that is a wee
bit less than the Ross. Both reels have their fans. And, it's tough to
beat the Orvis Battenkill. At just over $100, the 8/9 Battenkill is a great
deal. It's not machined, but unless someone fishes all the time for big
fish that will stress the reel and its components, the reel will last a long
time. And, if you ever have a problem with it, Orvis will take care of you.
With the other reels, you'd have to mail them in to get repaired. If you
were in the middle of the season, and the Orvis reel failed, I'll bet you
could walk into Orvis and they'd just swap it out.

So many reel options, so little budget!

In the next month or two, we should chat about Christmas Island and when you
want to go. I'd like to go along, which I think I could work depending on
when you want to go. If we plan enough ahead, we should be able to recruit
some WFFC guys. That would be fun to have some more club guys go. Jon
Williams wants us to keep him in the loop.

Are you going to the Dry Falls outing? I might. I have in-laws coming next
weekend, so all weekend will be spending time with them. Then, my 40th
birthday is the next weekend (the 6th), and I have to take Friday the 5th
off, because I'll have relatives in town. I'm supposed to tie at the
Jamboree, and I'm not sure how I'm going to fit that in with the birthday
and the relatives. Some guys want me to go with them on the 7th on a road
trip to Bozeman and the Madison River. I went last year at this time, and
had an absolute hey day, so that's really tempting. Then, two weeks after
that, I leave on the 21st (Sunday) to go to a work convention in Las Vegas,
that will last through the following Wednesday, for me to be back on
Thursday morning the 25th. Of course, Memorial Day weekend is a few days
after, and that weekend is the opening of the Idaho rivers. My
brother-in-law wants me to come for opening day on the Coeur d'Alene River.
I had some superb fishing there last year every time I fished, and it would
tough to pass up. However, my May is so full, I may wait until the
following weekend or so to go there.

So many fishing opportunities, so little time!

Fish on!

Richard
