I'll second the report by Jeff Hale, today the weather wasn't the best but
the canyon was still full of trout chasing caddis. The fish rose in waves as
the sun would come out and the wind would calm a bit, then it would be
rise-rise-rise then a brief slowdown followed by more rising. I fished along
the road side up from Umptanum (spelling?) for a good part of the day and
until the wind got too bad around 3:00 it was pretty hot. Almost every fish
that rose I managed to get up to #14 Dark Elk Hair caddis although I
promptly missed about 50% of the strikes I had. Still I managed to land a
half-dozen fish around 14-15" and one smaller 11" one, and lost another 3-4
nice fish after one or more jumps. I had one very large fish take and when
his back came out of the water it shocked me so much I pulled the fly away
before he had a chance to really take, I need to relax more when dry fly
fishing.
