Fished the upper Miller River on 7/28. It's a very scenic area to be sure,
but typical of west side high-gradient mountain streams, It's also a rough go
scrambling over slick boulders and tangled log jams. Felt soles and good
balance are real assets. (Don't ask how many tumbles my partner and I took.
Writing this with a splint on my typing finger isn't so easy.) The beautiful,
wild 7" to 10" rb that make the pools and pockets their home are usually
cooperative though, and each one hooked, in my opinion , deserves to be
released. They will take almost any fly and thankfully they're not very
critical of its presentation. We used gold bead hares ears, irresistibles,
stimulators, and even a small madam x, all with some success. To me, it's
quite remarkable that mountain streams in this pristine condition still
exist so close to a large metropolitan area. Hope we can keep them that way.

Good fishing! Bob Martin
