Rocky Ford fished well this last weekend. Saturday was overcast, cool and slightly breezy. The change in weather to fall conditions must have put the fish onto the bite. There were few refusals once fish were sighted. Early in the day I had the section above the metal footbridge all to myself. The handful of people that were there were fishing the water below the bridge and across from the hatchery. I hadn't fished this area before, so gave it a try as well. The current is much stronger there and the fish seem to hold up in groups. Smaller fish dash about in the current grabbing at insects and flies while the larger ones hold on the bottom and along the edges. The smaller fish are hot. I had one take the fly and then jump several feet into the air right up onto the bank. Before leaving, I tried fishing by the metal footbridge. These are large fish, but they have seen it all. Everybody takes a shot at them. These guys were taking emergers in the middle of the water column. I threw out a pheasant tail and watched a large fellow flash on it. He weighed in at 9 lbs. and had beautiful red coloring. That was the largest fish I've ever caught at the Ford. Sunday was perfect Rocky Ford weather. It was sunny with warming temps and no breeze. While the fish weren't as eager, seeing them take the fly was easier. Again all of the fisher people were in the lower section leaving the majority of the water wide open. Regards, Mike
